TAMBOPATA RESERVED ZONE 4D/3N
The Tambopata Reserved Zone covers approximately 1.5 million hectares and was created in January 1990 to protect an area with one of the richest ecosystems in the world; since its creation, scientists have registered approxmately 20000 plant species, over 1200 types of butterflies, 900 bird species (1/5 of all the existing species of the world, including 32 parrot species – 10% of the world’s total) and more animal groups than any other location of comparable size. Tours to the Tambopata Reserved Zone can easily be organised as part of your trip with daily flights leaving from Cusco and Lima.
DAY 1
Fly from Cusco or Lima to Puerto Maldanado and transfer to Refugio Amazonas Lodge. Orientation in the afternoon and nighttime Caiman hunt.
DAY 2
Morning – Oxbow lake visit by canoe to find Caiman, Hoatzin and a variety of birds followed by birdwatching from the canopy tower. Afternoon – Farm visit to learn about Amazon crops and plants followed by an Ethnobotanical tour to learn about the medicinal and cultural uses of various plants. Evening – lecture prepared by the staff covering conservation issues, opportunities and projects in the region.
DAY 3
Morning – visit to a parrot clay lick which is frequented by a wide variety of parrots and parakeets. Afternoon – Brazil Nut Trail and Camp, a forest walk to a Brazil Nut haarvesting site that has been used for decades if not centuries. Learn about the process of harvesting and processing Brazil nuts. The hike continues on to a mammal clay lick where you can spot deer, guan, parakeets and if you’re lucky Pecarry (wild rainforest pigs). Evening – night walk to spot mammals and frogs that can bee hard to spot during the daytime.
DAY 4
Return to Puerto Maldanado by boat and then either fly on to Cusco or Lima.
